Remembering Gina George (11-09-1940 :: 12-23-2019)
Surrounded by family and friends, Gina George
(Georgina) passed away peacefully at her home on
Monday, December 23, 2019.
Gina George was born at Watford, London, on
November 9, 1940, to Greek parents from Cyprus,
Andreas Georgiou and Mary Karayiannis.
When Gina was sixteen, the family, for better prospects
and a better life, migrated from the U.K. to Australia and
then to Canada. Gina immigrated to the US on her
own and became a naturalized US citizen in April 1967
and has lived most of her life in California at Berkeley,
Santa Monica and Malibu. An English Literature
graduate from the University of California, Berkeley,
she retired as a Computer programmer with ‘Farmer's
Insurance’, Simi Valley in August 2010, and settled at
the Sun Lakes Country Club, Banning, California.
Highly spiritual and a sincere practitioner of meditation,
Gina opted for the Sun Lakes community to be near Joshua
National Park, which she regarded as a spiritual
energy spot. Embracing all religions, she regularly
worshiped at the temples, Society of Abidance in Truth,
Santa Cruz and Tien Tao Association, Los Angeles. As
an ardent student of Frederick Lenz (Rama), for
years she followed his renowned, 'Lakshmi
series' talks.
Popularly known as ‘Sita’, Gina George has conducted
Spiritual satsangs (Meditation sessions) for some
three decades and has guided many a spiritual aspirant. She
emphasized the Indian Satguru, Sri Ramana
Maharshi’s percepts of ‘Silence’ in her teachings and
inwardly prayed for one and all.
Gina leaves behind a grieving husband, Vasudevan Devaraj
(Vasu), whom she met during one of her
spiritual sojourns to South India. She always prided
in the fact that she travelled 9000 miles to the other side
of the world to find her beloved.
Her close surviving family members who will miss her much
include: Younger brother David George, sister-
in-law Isabel (Vancouver, Canada), nephews Andrew George
& Richard George, niece Mary Bowmans,
Adam Bowmans, niece-in-law Noleen Richard, grandnephews Niko
George & Charlie Bowmans and
grandnieces, Nyssa George & Kaleeya Bowmans. Her two
dogs, Mooji and Kashi, were precious to her.
Gina George, a vegetarian most of her life, was physically
very activity. Until August 2019, thrice a week,
she swam twenty-one laps at the swimming pool and remained
as youthful as ever. In her last days, she
bore her pain with grace and courage. Her immortalized
last words to her brother, two days before her
departure were: "We are going Home,
David".
Gina George was a beautiful soul with gentleness of spirit,
and deep compassion for the less fortunate. We
are blessed to have known her, and shared time with her as
friends, or been guided by her at “Satsangs”.
A Celebration of Life Memorial service for Gina George will
be held in the North Clubhouse of Sun
Lakes Country Club, Banning, California - 92220, on Sunday,
January 12th, 2020, at 11:30 a.m.
We pray for her soul to rest in peace.
