Marvin M. Shimel
February 1, 1929 - August 22, 2017
Marvin M. Shimel, 88, a long time resident of Grand Terrace,
has passed away in his home and joins his beloved wife, Virginia, who passed
predeceased him five years ago. Marvin was born in Nevada, Iowa, one of
six children, to the late Amasa and Cora Shimel.
Marvin graduated in 1946 from Clemons High School in
Clemons, Iowa and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force at age
17. He served 3 years, returned to civilian life, but re-enlisted 6
years later in 1955. Marvin served one year in Vietnam. His various
duties in the audiovisual field as a motion picture technician consisted of
providing combat intelligence and documentary photography for the Air
Force. It has taken him to 29 different countries including France,
Germany, Spain, Iceland, Nairobi, Kenya, Thailand, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan,
Morocco, Libya, Italy, and Greece (to name a few). He finally retired
after 23 years of service.
Marvin leaves behind five children; 12 grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his
brothers Roy and Melvin; sisters Venita (Shimel) Blake, Margaret (Shimel)
Cheville and Corrine (Shimel) Vint.
Services will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Friday,
September 29, 2017 at Hermosa Gardens Cemetery Chapel, 900
Meridian Ave. Colton, CA 92324. Interment will take place at
the Riverside National Cemetery, 22495
Van Buren Blvd. Riverside, CA 92518. Reception will follow at the
Norton Younglove Senior Center, 459
Center St. Riverside.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be
made in his name to the American Cancer Society.
