May 2, 1942 - January 8, 2018
Larry David Thompson, 75, of Upland, California passed away
on January 8, 2018 after battling a prolonged illness. His wife and children
were by his side in his final days and hours.
The youngest child of four, he was born to Verle and Mary
Thompson of Marion, Iowa on May 2, 1942. He lettered in wrestling, track, and
football and was a member of the National Honor Society all four years of high
school. Larry also earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Administration of
Justice from Cerritos College in 1970.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1964 and was
stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, and deployed
for a one-year tour in Vietnam as a combat medic. Larry received an Honorable
Discharge in 1967 and soon after moved to Los Angeles, California. He served
with the Los Angeles Police Department from 1967 to 1993 and retired after 26
years of dedicated service as a Sergeant. His long career in protection services
led him to work as a security professional for Bank of America and later for
the federal courthouse system.
Larry found his passion in service to his country and
community and by volunteering to help others throughout his life. He was a
dedicated member of the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) and adult
soccer where he coached and refereed for 26 years – among other accolades,
earning the title of National Referee. Additionally, he was the head wrestling
coach at The Webb Schools of Claremont and transformed the program into a
highly competitive squad in their division. He also volunteered at the local
library in his final years.
Larry was also adventurous and greatly enjoyed backpacking
with friends and appreciating the outdoors. He was known to be quick with a
joke and laugh and valued social gatherings with others. He is survived by his
wife Peggy Thompson, sons Kevin and Scott Thompson, and daughters Athena
Kentros and Brandi Butze. Larry was also blessed with 10 lovely
grandchildren, many other relatives, and a host of friends.
