Sequoyah Callahan Gavin

April 10, 2000 - July 13, 2018

Sequoyah lived his whole life in wonderful Valley Center (VC), California.  He attended Lilac School, VC Middle and High School.  He was an excellent student and often praised for his unique combination of artistic and logic skills, creativity, abilities with tech gadgets, and his friendliness.  Sequoyah was always smiling, especially for pictures, and when he was around his friends.  He had a lot of good friends from VC, North County San Diego, and around his Dad's work at CSU San Marcos and Palomar College.  Sequoyah was also very athletic and played local sports his entire life, including VC Youth Soccer, VC Little League, VCHS Jaguar Football, and VC Avengers & Jaguars Rugby.  "Coy", as many called him was loved by so many sports mom's, coaches, local tribal relatives, VCPUSD teachers and staff, church pastors and staff, and parents, students, and staff of his Dad's programs at the local college and university.  Sequoyah attended Emmanuel Faith Community Church.

Sequoyah will be dearly missed by so many he knew and touched, in just 18 short years.  His presence on Mother Earth while short lived was full of love for others.  He would want all of us to remember him for his "big heart" and giving nature.  He always made sure to share his belongings, tech gadgets, and toys, and he always helped others by giving his money, food, or time and other resources.  He experienced a lot and shared a lot.  He would ask us to do the same, for each other, every day, as life can be too short.

Sequoyah is survived by his Father, Calvin One Deer Gavin, his mother, Suzanne Gavin (of Arkansas), and his brother Skylar Calumet Gavin, and many Gavin family members across the country.  And survived by his Aunt Linda Locklear, Uncle Mike Almer, Cousins Narci and Ushla, and all his local and Tribal cousins.  Sequoyah was an enrolled member of the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians, and is survived by many more family members and relatives with the Soboba Tribe.

The Viewing will be held Friday, July 20, from 5-7pm, and a "Talking Stick" and Rosary will follow at 7pm., at the Inland Memorial Harford Chapel, in Hemet, Ca.  The Funeral Mass, Burial, and a Gathering (with meal) afterwards will begin at 11am, at St. Joseph's Church, at the entry of the Soboba Reservation, on Saturday, July 21, 2018.
