Peter Mow
March 3rd, 1923 - January 16th, 2023

Peter W.T. Mow of Upland, passed away on January 16, 2023, less than two months before his
100 th birthday. He is survived by his children Ronald Mow (Joyce), Angeline Mow Vogl
(Harry), Michael Mow (JoAnn), Jeffrey Mow (Amy), as well as eight grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren.
Born in Shanghai, China, Peter was the youngest of five children, whose American-educated
father was a physician in the city’s International Settlement. During WWII, he was a
photographer for the Chinese government, a pursuit he continued after the war, working in India
for the China National Aviation Corporation. He married Tsupin Mow in 1944, when they were
both stationed in India (she worked for the RAF). Following the war, the couple emigrated to
the United States -- Peter in 1948, to enroll at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, and Pin the
following year. Following graduation, Peter worked as a cameraman for different enterprises but
finally settled at Prudential Insurance Company’s Western Home Office on Wilshire Boulevard,
where he rose to the position of director of group contracts; he retired after more than 30 years
with Prudential.
Living in North Hollywood and later in Upland, Peter and Pin were active members of the
Episcopal Church and other organizations, such as Meals on Wheels and the Foothill Family
Shelter in Upland. Peter’s interests included golf, photography, and classical music. He and Pin
were also avid world travelers (Las Vegas was a frequent destination) and accomplished cooks
who loved sharing their love of Chinese cooking with others (their hot pot dinners were
legendary and Peter’s steamed fish recipe was published in Bon Appétit magazine). Perhaps he
drew his greatest joy from his family; he delighted in sharing the accomplishments of his
children and grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at St. Marks Episcopal Church on Saturday, March 11, at 10:30
am. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Foothill Family Shelter, 1501 W 9th St D,
Upland, CA 91786, with the notation, “in Memory of Peter Mow.”
