Obituary
Gloria Irving was born June 21, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan to the union of Samuel and Lela Irving. From that union there were five children, Gloria, Lois, Era, and Diane. Gloria attended and graduated from Northeastern High School.
Gloria met and married Willie Brooks in 1953 and from that union, six children were born, Rene, Deborah, Steven Robin David, and Donald. Willie Brooks was in the U.S. Army and that meant a move to Germany and other travels pursued.
Gloria was very creative. She loved sewing and decorating. She could knit, crochet, and macrame some of the most beautiful items you’ll ever see. She loved dancing and bingo and played the piano (she never had a lesson).
Gloria transitioned peacefully on September 12, 2023. She lived a feisty life and celebrating her memory are her children, Alyce Brown, Lynn Turner, Rene and Greg Clark, Deborah Brooks, Robin and Lionel Brown, David Brooks, and Donald and Candace Brooks. There are 14 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 26 great-great grandchildren, and 19 great-great-great grandchildren. Gloria was fondly called little grandma, granny, grandma, and “G”. She was so proud of all of you and referred to everyone as either fat or precious!
Gloria is preceded in death by her parents, brothers, sisters, and her son Steven Brooks.
I’m Free
Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free,
I’m following the path God has laid you see.
I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love,
to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
I found that peace at the close of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Oh yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I savored much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don’t lengthen it with undue grief.
Lift your hearts and peace to thee,
God wanted me now; He set me free.
We Had a Wonderful Mother
We had a wonderful mother,
One who never really grew old.
Her smile was made of sunshine,
And her heart was solid gold.
Her eyes were as bright as shining stars.
And in her cheeks fair roses to see.
We had a wonderful mother,
And that’s the way it will always be.
But take heed, because,
She’s keeping an eye on all of us,
So, let’s make sure,
She will like what she sees.
