Margaret Mary Hamm

Margaret Mary Hamm, affectionately known as Peggy, was born on July 7, 1953, in North Adams, Massachusetts, to Ed and Claire Horsfall. She was one of five children, growing up in a tight-knit family with three sisters and one brother. Peggy's childhood was filled with love and strong family bonds, as they moved along the eastern side of the country. She graduated from Cedar Cliff High School in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, in 1971, and in the early 1970s, her family relocated to Southern California, where Peggy joined them as they embraced a new chapter of their lives.

It was at a Halloween party in 1982, hosted by mutual friends, where Peggy met John, the love of her life. They quickly formed a deep connection and were married on September 10, 1983, in Orange County, California. Together, they built a warm and loving home in Riverside, California, where they remained throughout Peggy’s life. Their family was blessed by the addition of their daughter, Rachel, in December 1987 - who brought them immense joy.

Throughout her life, Peggy held a variety of jobs covering a wide range of disciplines. Her attention to detail and organizational skills allowed her to excel at her work, which she performed for almost two decades. She had a deep passion for crafts and music, which she shared with those she loved, often creating meaningful handmade gifts that reflected her creativity and care.

Peggy’s strength and dedication were further demonstrated in her role as a Marine wife, supporting John during his 16 years of service and wartime deployments. She continued her service as a Marine mom, proudly cheering on Rachel during her five years in the Corps. Peggy knew the meaning of sacrifice and the resilience it took to handle life’s everyday challenges—and even the more extraordinary ones—with grace and strength. Peggy's fierce love for her family knew no bounds; in a moment of incredible bravery, she once fought off an armed attacker during a robbery to protect the life of her infant daughter.

She was a devoted mother who was incredibly involved in all aspects of her daughter’s young life, often volunteering at the school to foster growth and education. As her daughter grew, she continued to build their relationship, taking time for camping and excursions to what would become favorite destinations. 

In 2009, Peggy was diagnosed with dementia, a challenge that she faced with remarkable courage. For more than a decade, she fought to preserve her spirit and the vibrant personality that those around her knew and loved. After a long battle, she lost the war, peacefully passing on September 9, 2024.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 41 years, John, her beloved daughter Rachel, her sisters Beth and Christi, and her brother Steve. 

Known for her nurturing spirit and generosity, Peggy’s light, her love, and her laughter will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
