Ilah M. Raaz
January 15, 1926 - March 28, 2018

Ilah M. Raaz, beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Friend passed peacefully on March 28, 2018.

Ilah was born in Jefferson, Iowa on January 15, 1926, to George and Ida Richards.  She had one sibling, a brother George (“Bud”) Richards and four daughters, Constance Raaz, Tekla Housley, Wendy Patrick and Barbara Leach.  Ilah was preceded in death by her first husband, Keith Mounce who was killed in World War II and was the father of her unborn daughter, Constance, Quentin W. Raaz, her husband of more than 50 years, her youngest daughter Barbara Leach, her son-in-law, Ted Housley and her brother Bud.  She is survived by her daughters Constance, Tekla and Wendy, her sons-in-law, Dennis and Phil, her grandchildren, Todd, Bryan, Jeff, Stephanie, Tekla Renee, P.J. , and her great-grandchildren Priscilla, Paige, Faith, Ryan, Ilah, Roxie, Luke, Grant, Cole and Ace and many nieces and nephews.

As a young woman, Ilah was fortunate to be able to take piano and dance lessons.   She was also a lifeguard at the local community pool.

After her husband Quentin Raaz retired from the Air Force, Ilah joined the work force and was the secretary to the Sheriff of the County of San Bernardino, Frank Bland.  She loved her job.

Ilah lived a full healthy life for 92 years.  An unforeseen virus interrupted her life.  We just knew she was going to live to be 100.  Until she was hospitalized on March 7, 2018, Ilah lived alone, did her banking on-line, sent a daily email to family, made her bed and took care of her personal needs.  Her accomplishments are many.  She rarely complained about aches and pains.  She was most concerned about others and how they were doing.  She loved all of her family unconditionally, was honest, kind, unselfish, generous, loyal, forgiving.  She was a mentor to many young women when she was a military wife and continued to be a mentor to young women during her tenure as an employee with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office. Ilah was a woman ahead of her time.

We miss her now and will continue to miss her but are comforted knowing that her passing was peaceful and she, Quentin, Barbara, Ted and Bud can look over all of us to make sure we are safe.

Thomas Howard Swisher

March 20, 1938 - March 27, 2018

On March 27, 2018, we said good by to our head coach Thomas Howard Swisher.

Tom loved life and loved his family. He also enriched the lives of many through civil service, coaching, teaching, being a regular presence with American Karate Association of Champions through the City of Barstow Parks and Recreation, and by just sitting around Walmart for hours at a time for no real reason.

A basketball coach named Swisher, Tom was also a Veteran of the Navy, a retiree from the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow, and also a retiree from the Silver Valley School District. He also spent a few years working in the medical field- an occupation which lead him to his future wife.

He is joined in heaven by his parents Thomas Nelson Swisher and Edna Jane Becker, his sister Cindy Martinez, his children Robert and Diana Swisher, as well as a crapton of Basset Hounds.

Tom will forever be remembered by his family left here on Earth- his wife Ruth Swisher, his daughter Robin Bruton, his sister Beverly Santucci, and so many grandchildren and great-grandchildren you would think they are trying to repopulate the planet. He also leaves behind one crabby ass weiner dog and, at the bottom of the Colorado River, several dozen cross necklaces and even a few wallets.

Services will be private, and he will be put to rest at Riverside National Cemetry. In lieu of flowers, please celebrate his life by drinking caramel frappuccinos and giving a forever home to an animal in need.

We love you old man. Your ass sucks wind.

A quote by C.J. Adams that Nancy kept close at hand:

“You are a woman of wisdom, courage, strength, compassion & creativity.
Go forth, then, with the fire of confidence in your heart, kindle it with care, & never let its brilliant flame go out!”

For Nancy:
To each God gives a special friend, and angel oh so fair
To assist and guide our steps, no matter when or where
To whisper words of hope and peace, to know with joyful heart
Love is forever near, never are we apart.

Beloved sister,
We shall meet again in Light and Love.
Safe journey home.

David Aubrey Tapley

October 16, 1953 - March 12, 2018

David Aubrey Tapley was born on October 16, 1953 in Bakersfield, California to Clyde and Anna Mae Tapley.  David was the oldest of Clyde and Anna’s 6 children.  He went to his final home on March 12th after a long illness.

As a child, the family moved frequently but always considered Bakersfield to be their home base.  David graduated from Ontario High School in 1972.  His 1st job, while he was still in high school, was for Southwest Concrete Products in Ontario.  It was here that he learned to drive a cement truck, making runs back and forth to Mission Ready Mix.  He soon moved up to driving a big rig and delivering precast products to various construction sites around Southern California.  In 1974, he worked briefly for M Company in Chino, building and delivering mobile home frames.  In May 1974, he married Nelly Patricia Verburg.  Later that year, he started working for California Freight Lines and began transporting flatbed goods all over California.  Late in 1977 he purchased his 1st big rig and became Owner-Operator of Tapley Trucking.  Over the next 25 years he continued driving for several different companies hauling lumber, steel, home improvement products and refrigerated goods all over California and also into Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho and Oregon.

David retired due to health reasons in 2004.  But retirement didn’t stop him from driving.  Vacations meant driving wherever the road led.  On his own, he frequently would just want to ‘Go for a drive’. They are few places in Southern California that he didn’t visit during those drives.

David is survived by his wife, Nelly. Also his mother, Anna; brothers, Gary and Michael (Kathy); sisters, Patricia and Debora; 5 nieces and nephews and 6 great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Clyde; sister, Lora; brother-in-law, Patrick; and nephew, Joshua.
